Leadership hosts disability awareness week

Last week, the first ever Disability Awareness Week was observed. Junior Leadership class member Marissa McCall directed the event, as part the Leadership class curriculum. She offered the chance for students to navigate through a day using wheelchairs on one day, and had students tie their right hands tied behind their backs on another. The purpose was to give students a feel for what students with limited mobility must go through on a daily basis.

“Responses I got from students were that kids take their arms and legs for granted. A lot of the kids in wheelchairs were not able to use their dominant hand said it was harder than they expected,” McCall said.

McCall thought that the event would raise awareness and help students to understand the day to day difficulties of having a disability.

“The fact that I am disabled gave me the idea to do this event. Also so others can take a journey in my shoes for a day but only I go through it everyday,” McCall said.
