Are we who we say we are online?

We’ve all seen those “Expectations vs. Reality” photos, where the expectation of our lives is far superior to the reality. We all want our lives to be a certain way, but in the end, reality gets in the way and shows us that life isn’t what they want it to be. Did you ever stop and realize that for some people, the internet has somehow turned into their little personal expectation of themselves? They somehow make it so their lives seem so much more interesting than it actually is. It’s like they make up what they want their lives to be like so that it seems more exciting. Are we really that bored? Of course we are or you wouldn’t see those silly status updates that say, “Having an awesome time at *insert boring place in Rolla here* Lol.” It’s highly doubtful that they’re actually having that much fun in town and it’s even more doubtful that they’re actually “laughing out loud.” Then there’s the case where a person is at a social event and probably not having the best time, but once they see a photo op, they immediately change their expressions, their body language and put up the signature thumbs up and giant smile, to show that they’re having an “awesome” time because they know that picture is going online, so they’ve got to appear happy. Why do we do this? It’s almost like when you were little and one of your parents is yelling at you and suddenly the phone rings and they sound sweet and warm. Then you think, “You are so fake.” We put up a front because in our society, it’s a bad thing to show people that you’re not having the best time or that you’re not happy. There’s not really a way to explain why, but that really just the way it is. We challenge you to be yourself, not who you appear to be online.
