Miner Mayhem, Block Party scheduled

Missouri S&T will be holding its annual Block Party on April 5 from 3:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The event will close a week of festivities at the university, and provides entertainment for residents of Rolla.

“Every year Missouri S&T’s Student Union Board puts on ‘SUB Week’ which is a week of festivities organized by the various committees of the Student Union Board. Block Party is the annual student carnival that generally closes SUB Week,” Missouri S&T sophomore Kylie Croft, director of the Campus Traditions Committee, said.

Block Party is a celebration in which the community can enjoy the various forms of entertainment and have a great time.

“Block Party has a carnival like atmosphere; it consists of a comedian, two bands, inflatables, a caricature artist, BBQ, a[n] Easter Egg hunt, fireworks and much more,” Croft said. “Other campus organizations also set up various booths to promote their organization at Block Party.”

Miner Mayhem and Block Party will pair up for a grand weekend this year. On April 6, a concert will be held, featuring a few popular bands.

“Miner Mayhem is put on by SUB’s Concerts Committee. This year it is featuring Switchfoot with Cavo and one more undisclosed band,” Croft said.

Every year, the festival has grown larger and larger, and the attendance has gone up accordingly.

“The event has definitely grown over the years.  Each year SUB and the other organizations that contribute to Block Party try to outdo the group that planned it the year before,” Croft said. “Roughly 2,000-2,500 people attend Block Party, but we are hoping to make that number even bigger this year.”

Block Party also helps expose the university to the community.

“Anything that S&T can do to generate interest from the community and prospective students is never a bad thing,” Croft said.
