New and Improved: A library story

Many libraries and stores have recently changed to a new system that is based on the genre’s of the books. There, people that are looking for something new to read are able to easily find books by following signs or looking for the color that is associated with the genre of their choosing. The Rolla High School library has also recently been reorganized to follow this system. Thanks to librarian Jessie Kirkbride and library aid Dawn Falkenhain, it is now a simple process to find a book within a genre.

“So, if you like fantasy, then you’re going to go to the fantasy section. Maybe you’ll find a new author that what,” Kirkbride said.

The process is simple.

“Once you look up a book, down below, in addition to where you will find it, there will also be a color code, which will be a lot easier. So, once it’s in color code, it’s then alphabetized by author’s last name,” Kirkbride said.

Simply put, all you must do is choose a genre, or a book, check the color code, either on one of the charts that are inside of the library or, once the system is up, on the computer, and then find the color that is linked with the genre.

“The reason we decided to go with the genrefication-process, is, it seems to be a new trend in High School libraries. But it’s also how we look for books,” Kirkbride said. “With this new system, finding books will hopefully be easier.” If you found a book in the past that you liked, then maybe other books in that genre will also catch your attention.

Kirkbride mentioned only a few kinks in this system.

“I’ve only had one or two people say that they didn’t really care for it [the system]. Their concern was that it would be hard to find a book, which, right now, they’re right because I don’t have it all updated and in the system,” Kirkbride said.

This change in the system is coming up soon though.

Another problem that she encountered was that some books could go into different genres.

“Several books can fit into several different genres and so we [the readers] may not agree. But if there was any hint of paranormal or anything sci-fi or fantasy, I’d put it in the sci-fi fantasy, because someone who does not like sci-fi or fantasy, if they just get a taste of it in a book, they may not like it,” Kirkbride said.
