Tardy sweep causes frustration for late students

The tardy sweep has more negative effects than benefits. With the tardy sweep as it is now, a student has to get a slip from the commons and head to class. This takes more time out of the class that the student should be in. The tardy student then has to go back to class later than if they didn’t have to walk to the commons and back to class. The teachers should be responsible for marking the student tardy instead of wasting their class time. Yes, that may take some time away from the lesson, but doesn’t it make more sense than losing more class time just to get a piece of paper that tells the teacher why the student was late?

The students should learn that being late to class isn’t acceptable, but the current tardy sweep isn’t working. The student already knows they’re late and may take their time getting back to class. If students were counted tardy like absentees, they would eventually figure out that the faster you get to class, the less material you miss and have to catch up on.

Yes, students may always be tardy and that can never be stopped, but I’m sure there are more efficient ways. There is a chance that tardies would go down if there were more time between classes. Most students rarely have time to go to their locker or to the restroom and if they do, it would mean being late to class. I am only able to use my locker before and after school and right before lunch. My classes are spread across the building and since my locker is near the end of a hallway, it makes using it more difficult. I would have a better chance of going to my locker more often if we were given more time too.

The tardy sweep could be eliminated if students were given more time to get to class and the number of late students would probably decrease drastically.
