“I love creativity and want to support anything creative.” This is the sentiment that inspired math teacher Frannie Lowrey to sponsor the up-and-coming dance team. Freshmen Savannah Williams and Praise Fatoba noticed the lack of dance opportunities besides cheerleading and took the initiative to start their own dance team. But their strong drive to start a dance team won’t start a club by itself; there’s a lot of paperwork, administration needing to approve the club, and of course having enough people to join.
“I just asked everyone I saw, like, ‘You look like a dancer, do you want to join?’” Fatoba said.
That approach has worked really well for Fatoba, and there are already 21 students who have joined the Google Classroom for the dance team. Fatoba and Williams have already reached these numbers without being fully approved as a club, and without advertising it.
“Not a lot of people know about it yet and when we publish it as a club, a lot more people will join and want to be involved,” Fatoba said.
Dance is a beautiful and creative art, and the student organizers believe everyone should have a chance to participate.
“I wanted to start [the dance team] with Praise because it’s one of the most creative things to do besides art, and I’ve never been to a school with a dance team before,” Williams said.
There are different opportunities than just dancing in the dance team.
“I personally don’t have experience with dancing… I wanted to do the management of it, social media, paperwork, and like music,” Williams said.
With the only chances to dance in the school is to audition for cheerleading or color guard, which you often need prior experience to join, a dance team is a great way to introduce new people into the world of dance.
“I moved here and there was no dance team like there was in my old school, and I knew I wanted to start one,” Fatoba said.
