This day in history: November 7

1874: Thomas Nast first depicts the Republican Party with an elephant in a political cartoon featured in Harper’s Weekly magazine.

1916: Jeannette Rankin of Minnesota becomes the first woman elected to congress.

1917: The Russian government is overthrown by the Bolsheviks, ending the Romanov rule and thus the USSR is established.

1944: President Franklin Delano Roosevelt is elected to his fourth term, the only US president to ever have done so.

1967: Cleveland, OH elects the first African American mayor of a major US city.

1989: Virginia elects L. Douglas Wilder the first African American governor.

2000: The presidential election between Al Gore and George W. Bush begins, and lasts for over a month due to disputed votes in Florida.
