1791: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart passes away in Vienna, Austria.

1848: The California Gold Rush begins after President Polk confirms that gold had been discovered in California.

1872: The Mary Celeste was discovered mysteriously abandoned off the shore of Portugal.

1933: The 21st Amendment, repealing prohibition, is ratified.

2002: Senate Republican Leader Trent Lott praises Strom Thurmond’s 1948 segregationist presidential bid at Thurmond’s 100th birthday celebration. Lott later resigned from the Senate due to his comments.
