Parking becomes bigger problem as sophomores get license

There are a lot of student drivers at Rolla High School and the parking lot is always packed. If you’re too slow getting to school then it’s hard to find a parking spot. If you’re too slow getting to your car after school then you get stuck in traffic. It’s always a crowded mess at the end of the school day. It can be frustrating and even a little scary to get out of there. However, those crazy, over-confident, drivers are no help to the issue.
The bell rings at 3:10 and classes are dismissed. Every student is rushing out to the parking lot. I try my best to rush to my car and beat the traffic but it’s nearly impossible. If I take too long then I will have to wait for traffic to die down before I can leave. Or I can join in the traffic but that is nerve racking for me. I take my time and begin to pull out of my parking spot when, suddenly, I’m forced to slam on the breaks because another student comes flying up the parking lot. They don’t slow down when they see me; they don’t look at me to apologize for almost running into me. They just keep going as though they never noticed me there. If you’re one of those people, know this, I know you saw me and I don’t think very highly of you. Driving isn’t a game. You should be more careful. Maybe it’s that these people have the money to fix their car if they crash into someone, but I don’t. I get it, we all have places to be and everyone wants to get there fast. You can still make it home or to your practices on time while being a courteous driver.
Not every student drives like this and the students that do aren’t necessarily bad drivers, however, they are rude drivers and could very well turn into dangerous drivers. The parking lot is crowded and the best way to prevent accidents is to be courteous and patient drivers. So next time you’re in the parking lot, take your time and think about your fellow drivers.
