Unscheduled evacaution shows RHS emergency plans work

Shortly before the end of first hour this morning, the fire alarm sounded. Faculty and staff evacuated the building as planned by the fire evacuation procedure.

Nobody was ever in danger, no damage was done.

The cause of the evacuation was a result of the fire alarms reacting to a demonstration in a Science lab.

“I was doing some chemical demonstrations for Chemistry class, and I ignited a round of black powder to demonstrate a chemical change.  I have done this demonstration many times over the years, and while it does produce a lot of smoke, had never set off a fire alarm.  This year, it did!  One more demonstration that I won’t do again,” Chemistry teacher Steve Day said.

The unscheduled evacuation did give administrators the chance to see the emergency plans in action.

“I appreciate everyone following procedure and giving us a chance to practice an ‘unscheduled’ opportunity,” Principal Dr. Jim Pritchett said.
